Today the USGA announced two new amateur exemptions for both the US Open and the US Women’s Open. Going forward the champion of the US Junior and US Mid-Amateur will be exempt in to the US Open and the champion of the US Girls Junior and US Women’s Mid-Amateur will be exempt in to the US Women’s Open.
These exemptions start with the 2018 championships, which means that this year’s US Junior champion Noah Goodwin and the champion of this coming week’s US Mid-Amateur will both be exempt for the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock Hills. Similarly, Erica Shepherd who is this year’s US Girls Junior champion and the champion of the upcoming US Women’s Mid-Amateur will be exempt for the 2018 US Women’s Open at Shoal Creek.
With these new exemptions the USGA shows a strong commitment to the amateur game and continuing to enhance its amateur championships.
